Questionaire analysis

Question one connotes that 57% of the people taking the survey are female whereas only 43% are male. This result will allow us to work out which gender likes which genres and we can use this information to determine which gender will prefer our genre of films

The age of our audience is vital as it allows us to properly understand who we are targeting. due to the fact that 80% of people are between age 18-40 we are aware that their are no legal restrictions we have to make when making our film.

This result connotes that comedy, crime thriller and thriller are the three joint highest and most popular genres. This gives us the impression that a crime thriller is a popular genre and our target audience will want to watch films in this genre. due to thriller also being so popular we will add elements of a normal thriller film and maybe include small amounts of comedy.

This images shows us the different reasons why differant members of the audience would watch their chosen genre of film. In order to make all these people want to watch our film we have anonymously looked at the aspects they have chosen and will include as many of them as possible.

we will make the film as exciting as possible without making it too scary as the the audience members show they like exciting films but not films in which are scary. we will also add mystery and an element of surprise as this was also a popular feature.

This question allows us to understand our audiences least preferred genre. we are aware that the people who took this survey are not keen on genres such as romance and horror. Because of this information we know now not to include romance in our film and know to keep the horror and scary aspects of film minimal. This question also connotes that crime thriller is enjoyed by some people.

This question shows that the majority of our target audience watch films due to the plot. another large majority say they watch films due to a good opening sequence, after receiving this information we know that the best way to persuade our target audience is to merge the two together and have a good plot and a good opening sequence.

This questions asks the audience to rank the genres. this question shows that crime thriller is the most popular genre. This connotes that the target audience will be interested in watching our film. The most irrelevant genre ( Sci-fi) is the least popular genre. connoting we will not have to worry about the target audience not been entertained by our chosen genre.

This question shows that our audience are split on weather they buy DVDs or not. we know that the same amount of people "often": buy DVDs and
"Hardly ever" buy DVDs this connotes that our audience do still buy DVDs. This can be used as a way of making extra money

Male dominance

In the film momentum the male character is represented very defiantly to most crime/gangster films. The main character instantly seems less dominant than typical men in crime gangster films. The trailer opens with a non-diegetic voice over. The voice over is of the characters thoughts. The first line said is “where am I” this line of confusion signifies that he is not in control of himself, it also shows weakness and subverts a typical male character in this genre of film as men do not usually show weakness only dominance and masculinity, This is also shown in the next scene of the trailer when the male character is having a diegetic conversation with a women, a conversation in which he is confessing weaknesses he has. This completely subverts a mans stereotype of being tough and strong as he is asking a women for advice, women are stereotypically weaker than men so it was a surprise to see a man seeking a women’s philological advice. The trailer overall does show that men play an active role in films even when the film is about a emotionally wrecked character connoting a male dominance in the film industry.

A double pan is used in which causes the screen to go blurry for a few seconds. This has been specifically used in order to show the disorientation and confusion of the male character that clearly is struggling with his mental health. A male showing such weakness is unheard off in this genre of film therefore connoting that the men in this film are intentionally going against the typical stereotype of men

The rest of the trailer shows the character stampeding through the city committing numerous murders and assaults(even on women) The ideology of this connotes that men will always be  the violent , tough villain even when they are mentally insane , this conforms with the stenotype of men being the stronger gender, he is seen punching the women who he previously asked for advice from, connoting he was always more dominant and was just going through a rough patch.

The first two minutes of the film are full of many different enigmas. The film starts with an Anachronic narrative in which does not follow the same style of a typical film. The film begins with no equilibrium and uses a forking path to give the audience clues on the main plot. Low-key lighting is also used throughout the first two minutes of the trailer to give that dark gloomy effect. The male characters hands are covered in blood connoting his a committed some sort of murder or assault or has possibly been assaulted himself. This leaves the audiences asking questions of how the male character, used in this film is being represented.

Male dominance is also showed in the first few minutes in the film. The opening scene connotes that this film is very patrichal film as not one female character is included. Lauren Mulveys theory in which was influenced by an idea from fraud and Lucan as the ration of female to male characters is 0:2.

Gender representation

One film in which subverts a stereotypically male dominant film industry is a film that is called the assassin. The trailer shows from the start that the film is female dominant film. The denotation of  a close up of a women criminal connotes that she is the main character as she is the first person to be seen in the trailer. The close up used connotes that the women may have been in some sort of scrap or fight as she has deep looking scratches pouring down the side of her face. She is being guarded by  a large male character connoting that she may be very strong so a stereotypical man , who is tough and strong is needed to guard her.

A jump shot is then used to switch the scene. The non diagetic voice over is of a judge convicting this women character with charges of murder. A stereotypical women is expected to be weak and in the kitchen cooking the dinner. The murder charge and the prison guard connote that this is not the case and this women defiantly subverts the typical women stereotypes and is in fact a very, very dangerous women. This ideology is to connote that women can be dangerous too and not all are weak, emotional bimbos.

The next scene in the trailer goes back to conforming Laura mulveys theory in which males dominate as this scene sees the same women character being man handled and tied up by two men. The denotation of this strong women being tied up connotes that even though is very strong and subverts the typical stereotype of women, there will always be a man out there somewhere in which she cannot compete with. Even though she is not showing that she is like most other women , the film makers have included these male characters to show even strong women are not as powerful as men.
Now the scene has jumped again and this woman has been scientifically transformed into an assassin. The main focus on this part is the women receiving her assassin instructions. She is also seen to be holding and using a gun in a target shooting exercise. An exercise in which she succeeds with flying colours. The denotation of this once again connotes that this film subverts the typical female stereotype as she can use this weapon a lot better than her male counterparts. However the person giving her these instructions is indeed a male connoting that even though she is a strong, lethal assassin she still has to answer to a man connoting a patriarchal society

Women dominance is shown strongly in the next scene of the trailer. This part consists of two fighting scenes. The first of the two is a karate fight against a man. The man stereotypically is a lot stronger than her and should easily beat her, obviously in this instance this is not the case as we get a high angled shot of this women wrestling the man to the ground. This connote she is starting to earn resect and is slowly but surely becoming stronger than the men. This second scene includes her having a agent fight with another man who she eventually defeats after forcefully smashing him with a chair. Both these scenes connote that the ideology  behind this film is very metrical and defiantly subverts the steryotypes.

Equilibrium in Crime films

Equilibrium

The godfather:
Goodfellas starts with no equilibrium it begins with an anaerobic narrative in which a man gets brutally stabbed by a thug who in which kidnapped him and put him in his boot. There is a short break after this scene but soon after the main character creates his own disruption of the equilibrium as he begins taking part in illegal activity soon after being released from prison. His finances hit rock bottom and therefore he began dealing cocaine. There is a recognition of distribution of the equilibrium when the main character realises that he is being followed by a police helicopter. At the end of the film there is a new equilibrium in which the ain character is dropped of all previous charges.

Pulp fiction:

Pulp fiction is another gangster film in which complete averts todorovs narrative theory of the 5 structured stages of equilibrium. This is because there is no state of equilibrium at the start of the film and as a matter of fact there is hardly any moments of equilibrium throughout the film. A forking path is used throughout the film as there are many smaller stories giving clues to uncover the main story. Anachronic narrative is also used as the start is a part of the ending.

Generic conventions

Legends film trailer analysis

Legend trailer
Legend is a gangster film based on the two famous gangsters “The crays”. The trailer opens with an establishing shot in which shows the setting of a bar. Bars and pubs are common conventions in gangster films, this is denoted in the shot as in the background we can see around 50 tough, well dressed , classy men who look like gangsters from the 1900’s. The trailer also opens with synchronous sound. The non diegetic music is played synergitcally to an attractive young female shaking her hips on stage. This links to the male gaze theory as men will want to see this film in order to get glmises of the attractive women characters. A jump cut is then used as the trailer jumps to a zolly of a close up of one of the main characters. The character is well dressed and looks to be wearing an expensive tuxedo. This denotation is the high quality clothing he is wearing, this connotes he is a wealthy man and that gangsters in his time had class.

Diagetic sound is used as the same character is asked by his female guest if he “likes being a gangster” the non diagetic sound then turns Asynchronous and another jump cut is used switching the scene to a more dark and gloomy setting in which see a dark figure lurking through a gloomy tunnel. The audience can vagly make out the character is wearing one of them luxury tuxedos from the previous scenes which leave the audiences wondering who these gangsters really. The non diagetic sound in this scene turns a lot tenser and time lapping is used when the character slowly walks through the tunnel. This connotes that something bad is going to happen in the film and that this character may possibly have something to do with it. The camera in this scene stays static and does not move throughout the characters short walk through the darkness
The scene then changes to another establishing shot of London during an evening sun set. Non diagetic sound is placed over this shot of a voice over introducing the audience to the main characters in the film. The scene then jumps to a medium close up of the two main characters sitting in the back of a car. The fact they are being driven by somebody e could connote that gangsters in that  day and age were very controlling and often got what they wanted. The two characters are very authentically dressed , both are once again wearing classy and luxury tuxedos with their hair very neatly combed over, this connotes that gangsters did still care about the way they looked and that they want to show off to people the income they earn from there illegal on doings.

The next part of the trailer introduces us to the violence and serious gangster aspects of the movie. Synchronies sound is used in this part of the trailer as the music changes its intensity after every punch, which is thrown, and after every bottle smashed over someone’s head. At this part of the film a steady cam has been used as the cameraman is following the gangster round as he assaults numerous people in the bar he is in.

The next shot shows one of the twins looking out of a massive window in which opens a perfect view of the city of London. The connotation of this long establishing shot could be that the gangsters are meant to be in charge of the city. The denotation of them looking down at people through the window of a very tall building connotes that they are the top dogs and people should look up to them.
Throughout the rest of the trailer the typical conventions of a gangster, thriller film are continued. Colours such as grey and black are used more often than not in this trailer, this connotes that the film is a dark mysterious film in which is filled with large amounts of danger and possible death. The colour red is also used rather frequently in the trailer in which connotes that in the film there will be themes of danger, blood and death but also themes of love and possible betrayal.

The trailer finishes with numerous parallel sound during gun shots.. Head butts and fist fights. The speed in which the non-diegetic sound is at increases drastically through out the last 30 seconds of the trailer. The trailer also ends after a montage containing some sneak peaks of the action and fighting scenes in which they will get to see in the full film. This will cause the audience to go and watch the movie as they will know from the trailer of how dramatic and entertaining the film is.
